SeaDek non Skid Decks with EVA foam. SeaDek sheets available for cutting to size. Whether you sail or you have a powerboat you know the value of good nonskid. Non-skid gives you the important grip to keep boating safe.
Typically a boat comes with nonskid on all the necessary surfaces which is formed during the molding process. Non-skid provides traction with raised bumps and shapes and often feels like and looks like sandpaper.
However as active boaters we often find ourselves on hands and knees and this sandpaper type of non-skid is very harsh. You should see my shins from sailboat racing. When your trimming the leeward winch you often plant your shins and knees agains the cockpit coaming.
One product which is becoming more and more popular and which we reviewed in 2009 is SeaDek. SeaDek is a soft non skid surface made from EVA foam. SeaDek first started appearing on swim platforms and now we see it being used on sailboats.
SeaDek is made from thin EVA foam which is UV stable and is easily maintained and stain resistant. Not only does it give you a non skid surface it is soft to touch and if you fall or rub your knee on it it wont hurt or scrape. Its a bit like neoprene to the touch and compresses when a load comes on it, so impact is softened.
There are more advantages to SeaDek. SeaDek’s impact absorbing surface lessens fatigue. Many powerboats use it under the helm station so the drivers feet are cushioned. Cockpit coamings are also a favorite as leaning against SeaDek is more comfortable than a hard gel coat surface.
SeaDek comes in sheets and is peel and stick so application is easy for any DIY boater. (see video). SeaDek uses marine grade 3M™ pressure sensitive adhesive backing.
Easy to install and customizable, SeaDek is available in a variety of sizes, thicknesses and colors. We are seeing custom engraving for OEM’s or even private Owners logos. This adds more flair to an otherwise nondescript deck.
To install a SeaDek surface you first have to size the area you want to cover. Choices for SeaDek include sheets, Standard panels for OEM’s or custom designs.
You can purchase sheet material and cut it yourself. A large 39 x 77 inch sheet costs $141. For a cushion under the helm you can choose a standard size; 14″x36″ and 16″x39″ from $113 to $150.
SeaDek has a vast catalogue of patterns for many of the production powerboats on the market. Applications include swim platforms but can also include cockpit floors and coamings.
If SeaDek does not have your boat in its catalogue you can custom build a surface by providing them with a pattern. SeaDek has a video helping you to make the pattern. Both the standard OEM product and the Custom panels have rounded edges and corners for the full effect. Its also possible to have a logo imbedded.
One thing we often see on a powerboat is the swim platform. The easy access to the water and the ease of getting on and off has made the swim platform a must.
When your getting in and out of the water your probably going to be on your hands or knees at some point. This is where using SeaDek will provide a soft comfortable surface far nicer than a standard gelcoat finish.
J/70 with SeaDek faux teak deck finish
Most sailboats have a non skid surface built in by the manufacturer. Again this is effective but its harsh on the body.
SeaDek can provide the non skid properties but with a soft surface which will absorb impact, so you knees don’t take the hit.
In the picture you see a J/70 with a SeaDek surface. The owner has gone for the teak deck look but without the associated weight or cost.
