Zero lifejacket

Added to MyBoatsGear on 2/14/2010

Zero lifejacketOur Review
The new Zero vest from Spinlock looks like its been designed for Skiff type sailing. It hugs the body to give a low profile. Many life jackets and buoyancy aids have the floatation packed into a concentrated area, while giving open space around arms etc, for maneuverability. This approach leads to a bulky PFD, which sticks out from the body by a couple of inches.

The Spinlock Zero aid is very low profile so will lead to less drag and provide room needed to pass under booms, around sheets, shrouds etc. With a rash guard over the top you have a very low profile and smooth body surface.

The downside to this approach is that the buoyancy is spread over the body and not high up. The higher up the buoyancy the more likely the aid will keep your head up. However if you just need some floatation and a very low profile, Zero will be available in spring 2010.

Features

    Spinlock's Description
Spinlock’s new ‘Zero’ is a low-bulk 50N flotation vest designed specifically for the performance user. Its lean shape and supple construction make it ideally suited for the agile and intensive teamwork that decides success in the Sportsboat sector.

Spinlock Development Director Chris Hill describes how Spinlock took a completely fresh look at how sports sailors interact physically with boat and gear under race conditions. “Research revealed that present flotation wear has become over-restrictive for high-agility competitive keelboat racing. Zero’s low bulk, dynamic element construction and high-stretch panelling overcome the problem, by giving full articulation and unrestricted upper body movement”.

“It showed also that most flotation wear can block the drying and cooling effect of base layers and breathable spray tops. By using a combination of open mesh panels and a vented back, Zero effectively becomes the final layer of the breathable system. This integral ventilation is another real advantage in intensive racing”.

    Online User Consultation

Spinlock’s online research programme began with an anonymous URL www.clear-input.com placed in leading sports sailing publications, websites and online forums around the world, inviting every level of user to take part. Respondents detailed their performance requirements, favourite details, technical and design aspects of personal buoyancy wear.

Zero incorporates a number of special features that the research identified as important: a ‘Body Fit’ waistband adjuster which gives a secure personal fit for size and shape, whatever the clothing; an innovative fast-draining construction to prevent water overload; fleeced hand warmer pockets and separate, secure pockets for essentials.
