Sanyos just-released Xacti E1 ($490) is primarily a camcorder, the worlds first waterproof one. Its one of those tiny vertical pistol-grip camcorders that records onto SD memory cards instead of tape. (No card is included with the camera. A 4-gigabyte card, about $35, holds nearly three hours of best-quality video.) This report from David Pogues article "Cameras that Swim", In the NY Times. ' this is one great-looking camera. The controls are simple enough: one button near your thumb snaps a photo, and the other starts or stops recording video. But the zoom/four-way navigation controls are the size of a Tic Tac, and fussy in the extreme. And the video quality, well, if a camera phone is 1 on the quality scale and a digital tape camcorder is 10, the Sanyos quality is about a 7. But when you take this thing in the water holy manatee, its pure freakiness. The video is startling, especially at those magical transition moments between above-water and below-water. The excellent microphone fills the soundtrack with the sort of bubbly gurgles that youve heard before only on Jacques Cousteau specials. You can now create a video record of your rides down the water slide, your snorkel excursions, or just your family splashing around on the shore. The Sanyo is rated to remain waterproof and happy five feet underwater for one hour.
